Whether as a hot cup in the morning or as a pick-me-up in between: our coffee tastes even better now, because we have started to replace our previous coffee with the fair traded organic coffee "San Jena". This is the "city coffee" of our hometown Jena and a visible sign of the town twinning between Jena and its twin town San Marcos in Nicaragua.
"For us at SOMAG AG Jena, social responsibility means creating decent working and living conditions both for our own employees and for the producers of the products we consume. This is why we decided to opt for San Jena coffee", explains CEO Andreas Steps. "As a company we consume about 70 kg of coffee per year. We are glad that by enjoying San Jena coffee we can now also make a small contribution to a sustainable economy in Nicaragua", Steps continues.
The coffee beans originate from various fincas in the north and centre of Nicaragua. The coffee is imported by “Cafe Chavalo Leipzig”. Since El Chavalo buys the coffee directly from a cooperative and thus from the producers in Nicaragua, there is no intermediate trade. This ensures that as much of the sales proceeds as possible go directly to the producers. The higher income gives the farmers the opportunity to work in an environmentally friendly way in the long term. The intact nature in turn secures the farmers their future livelihood. In addition, the profit from the sale of San Jena is used to support school and training projects in San Marcos.
